How to "green" at school or at the office

Every single person can contribute to saving the nature with some simple measures

1. Turn off the lights
When you leave the working place, the office, the classroom all you have to do is push the button for the lights and you could save a lot of energy.

2. Use electronic communications
Use modern ways fo communication - e-mail, chat etc.

3. Use the fax machine reasonably
There is another way to fax people, there are computer programmes that you can use to easily send documents to somebody. By doing so, you will reduce the

expenses for paper and energy for printing the document.

4. Use recycled paper
In our daily work we use a lot of paper for draft, internal correspondence etc. If we use recycled paper even fo these needs only we will help the nature.

5.Travel effectively
That means that going to work or to school by bycicle or on foot will help the nature to recover from the damages that we all humans have caused.

6.Turn off your monitors
When you do not use your computer for a certain amount of time you could just turn off your monitor. Most of the energy consumed by the computer is in fact

used by the monitor (especially the old models).

How to "green" at home?

"There is no place like home", this is the most beautiful and cosy area. We can make it a better place to live in, if we just follow some simple rules.

1.Freecycling
We all have belongings we do not use, but we do not want to throw them away and they are everywhere - in the house, in the garage, in the yard, in the basement etc. Why don't you freecycle them? What is freecycling - it is when you give something to a friend so he could use it instead of throwing it away or leaving it scattering about.

2.Reuse

Reusing our belongings is a great way to help the Nature and reduce our CO2 emissions. There are two ways for doing it - we could use them again in accordance with their purpose (plastic bags, tubes etc.) or me could find them another application - invention.

3.Use microwave ovens
Micro ovens are between 3,5 and 4,8 % more effective than the ordinary ones regarding the consuming of energy. That's why instead of turning on your oven, which will need more time to preheat, use your microwave to heat your meal.

4.Use cold or cool water
Almost 90 % of the energy used for washing goes to warming the water in the washing machine.

5.Use energy saving light bulbs
They use up to 75% less energy than the ordinary incandescent bulbs and live 10 times longer.

6. Unplug everything you do not use
Most of the electrical appliances use energy even when they are not turned on - indicator lamps, LED, heating elements etc. Unplugging of such appliances might save up to 25 % energy.

7. Fill your dishwashers
We are all tempted to turn on the dishwasher even if it is not full. For one year the dishwasher uses as much water as a person uses for drinking for his whole life. Use the full capacity of your dishwasher.

How much CO2 do we produce?

1. If you watch television 8 hours a day - 44.6 kg/year
2. If you use air conditioner (heating) 8 hours a day - 944 kg/year
3. If you use air conditioner (cooling) 8 hours a day - 743 kg/year
4. Your refrigerator produces 57 kg/year

5. If you drive 10 km per day by a small car - 16 000 kg./year

To be CO2 neutral, for every ton CO2 you must plant 1-2 trees.

This means that if you are doing these things, you must plant between 10 and 20 trees.

How much trees did you plant last year?
